Google changed it’s logo yesterday and internet exploded. I still remember internet before Google. We had a bunch of web search engines, Lycos, Yahoo, Excite…and then there was Google. There was nothing wrong with any of the others, but for some reason everybody just unanimously decided Google was way better. I don’t even remember how it happened, but all of a sudden there was nobody in the world using anything other than Google.

Then there were the e-mail providers. There was everything from Yahoo mail, to Hotmail, to the usually crappy e-mails you got from your broadband provider (except it wasn’t even broadband at the time, it was simply dial-up). And then along came Gmail. I was one of the lucky people who actually got an invite to open an account, so I could still get a cool short and easy e-mail address. With that one I know exactly why it became so popular. It just gave you practically unlimited space for free, and nobody else did that at the time.

Now Google is pretty much the greatest company in the world, and anybody would be happy to work for them. But sometimes it seems like the also own half or the world. They own Picassa, they own Youtube, reCaptcha, they even own Android. Google Cars, Google Glasses, Google Maps, Google Earth. Luckily they mostly do make good things and at least on the outside they are a force for good. Hopefully they stay that way, because that much power is dangerous. They know everything about everything, and they can even predict the future events like elections with their search engine.

I’m not a big fan of the new logo, I liked the old one much better. But whether you like it or not, Google is a huge part of everyone’s life, so here’s a few Google t-shirts picked out based on your personal web searches.
