Akira could very well be the first truly huge anime. Sure you have Dragon Ball and stuff like that, but Akira is pure art. It’s not easy to watch. Even though it’s just a two hour movie, there’s two thousand pages of story crammed into those two hours. Just to give you an idea, a normal two hour movie would normally have a 120 page script. Which means if you want to capture all the details, you either need to be a genius or you need to rewatch it a bunch of times.

The setting is a post World War 3 Tokyo, in the near future. The city is run by corrupt politicians, and torn apart by gangs of terrorists, who try to overthrow the bad politicians. Caught between a rock and a hard place is a group of teenagers, trying to somehow make it out of the mess.

The art is truly magnificent. It was released about 20 years ago, but there are very few animes that are this close to perfect when it comes to artwork. Every detail was made with love and affection, there are very few still frames, and all the movement was drawn to match the story. Even the lip synching is good. The characters are drawn more realisticly, without those big anime eyes, which admittedly could be a turn off for some people.

The soundtrack is actually kind of minimalistic and quiet for most of the time. When there is music or chanting, it’s used to amplify the setting, and because it’s used in a minimalistic way, there’s a much bigger impact when it does happen.

I love watching Akira, chances are if you’ve liked it the first time, you will love it the second or the tenth time. The final 20 minutes of the movie make your brain melt every time you watch it, and it’s just an amazing 2 hour experience from start to finish.
