ExploreMove over Batman, there’s a new billionaire vigilante making waves in the live action superhero scene. Since its pilot in 2012, the CW television show Arrow has been doing quite well in the ratings, so much so that each episode averages between two and three million viewers. Oliver Queen, the man behind the mask of Green Arrow who is played by actor Stephen Amell has been slinging arrows at some of DC’s most iconic villains, including Deathstroke, Ra’s al Ghul, and Deadshot, all the while teaming up with equally big-name heroes such as Black Canary and even the Flash, who got his own CW show in 2014.
With so many iconic characters already in the spotlight, and with so much fan support for them and their stories, an interesting question comes up. Will Green Arrow and his CW comrades get a shot on the big screen alongside Ben Afleck’s Batman and Henry Cavill’s Superman in the upcoming Justice League movie? And even if the characters make it into the script, will they still be played by the same actors and actresses that are currently portraying them on CW’s growing slate of DC television shows? Much to Stephen Amell’s chagrin, the odds of this are looking doubtful.
Flash’s appearance in the upcoming Justice League movie has long been a given, much more so than the appearance of Green Arrow. With the CW’s version of the character, played by actor Grant Gustin, soaring in popularity, many fans began to speculate whether DC and Warner Brothers would choose to use the same character (and actor) in their cinematic universe. These fans didn’t have to wait long to get their answer, and it was a resounding no. Instead, the role was given to Ezra Miller, who will play the Flash in both The Justice League Part One and Two as well as in the character’s solo movie.
Stephen Amell, who has long been very vocal about his desire to play the character of Green Arrow on the big screen, didn’t waste any time in voicing his disapproval of Warner Brother’s decision to overlook Grant Gustin for the role. When asked if Amell thought he should get a shot at playing Green Arrow should the studio decide to put him on the big screen, he responded, “Yeah. Of course. And I feel like it should be Grant [Gustin] doing the movie.”
Perhaps Stephen Amell is already seeing the writing on the wall, a reality in which Warner Brothers continues to pretend that the characters played by him and all of the other CW actors, as well as all of their history and stories, do not even exist, replacing them at will with new faces and different backstories. If you’re a fan of CW’s Arrow and Flash, this can be a tough pill to swallow.
Nevertheless, both Arrow and Flash continue to be incredibly popular shows, and it is possible that enough fan support could turn the tide on the decision to keep DC’s cinematic and television universes separate. If you are a fan of the shows and would like to see Green Arrow get his shot at the big screen, it’s time to show your support. Team Arrow needs you now more than ever.
