Star Trek T-Shirts: Boldly Going Where No Tee Has Gone Before

Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its 5-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.

The first time I ever watched an episode of the original Star Trek, I was sitting on a couch at my best friend’s house with a bowl of popcorn and two cups of piping hot tea. It’s a show that I love, that many people who I care about love, and I’ve made so many friends with fellow Trekkies because of it. Yet, while we may still associate Star Trek with a bunch of awkward geeks at Comic Con, it’s so much more than just an old, slightly campy science fiction show.

Star Trek has always been about bringing people together. The writers created the show during an incredibly volatile time in American history – just after the Second World War, smack dab in the middle of the Cold War, yet it chose to bravely feature a lovable Russian character, as well as characters of every ethnicity working together on equal footing. Not only that, but it was the first television series to feature an African American woman as anything other than a domestic worker, and also featured one of televisions first interracial kisses.

We owe so much to Star Trek and all of its sequels. It’s an integral part of our pop culture, and had a direct influence on later SciFi television. Star Trek, like all good science fiction does, gave us a safe place to explore who we are as humans, where we came from, our place in the Universe, and where we’re going.

Beneath all of the cheesy special effects, rolling orchestral pieces, overdramatic acting (we’re looking at you, William Shatner!), and campy costumes, was a piece of fiction that sought to ask big questions and make its audience consider all the possibilities. It was a show about expanding our horizons, wherever those horizons may be.

Of course, there’s been mixed reactions to the reboot, but I personally really enjoyed having more of my favorite characters on-screen, even if they were played by different actors. But no matter how you feel about the reboot, there’s no denying that having a couple Star Trek t-shirts to show your love for the show is pretty fantastic.
