The Future Is Female T-Shirt Collection

“So please, set an example for every woman and girl out there who’s worried about what the future holds, and wonders whether our rights, opportunities, and values will endure. Remember that you are the heroes, the history makers, the glass-ceiling-breakers of the future…Despite all the challenges we face, I remain convinced that, yes, the future is female.”

— Hilary Clinton

“The Future is Female”

It’s an old feminist mantra that has been repeated over and over, but, where did it come from?

Believe it or not, it came from a t-shirt.

The slogan “The Future Is Female” first showed up when it was created for the bookstore, Labrys Books. Labrys Books was the first women’s bookstore in New York City. The design appeared on a t-shirt in 1975.

The tee was originally photographed by Liza Cowan. Her girlfriend, musician Alix Dobkin, was the woman pictured wearing it. From then on, the slogan caught on, fueling the feminist movement and empowering women worldwide. It’s appeared on shirt after shirt, on sweatshirts, and on signs created by protesters. It’s been tweeted, instagrammed, and shared all over the web countless of times. It’s been repeated in speeches by notable women like Hilary Clinton, and shouted from the rooftops at Women’s Marches around the world.

We’ve gathered together shirts from around the web that echo that original 1975 tee. These are shirts that you can feel proud wearing, standing in solidarity with others who fight for equality, empowerment, diversity, and inclusiveness. Because actually, she can.

So, check ’em out, and if you know of a “Future is Female” shirt and don’t see it here, go ahead and submit it so we can add it to our collection. We don’t want to miss a thing!
