When H.P. Lovecraft first published his “Call of Cthulhu” in the American Pulp Magazine, Weird Tales, he had no idea the kind of impact he’d have on pop culture. According to him, the great ancient being Cthulhu sleeps in his house beneath the ocean, existing as a source of immense subconscious anxiety for all humanity. Today, the “Cult of Cthulhu” is a real thing that exists. Its members attempt to summon the sleeping god once every year with their chanting. The rest of us just like reading the novels, finding Lovecraftian references in our favorite movies, shows, and video games, and buying sick Cthulhu merchandise.
