In 1990, JK Rowling’s train from Manchester to London’s King Cross was delayed, and it was during that delay that her first idea for the Harry Potter series came to her. Over the next five years, she amassed a mountain of notes on scraps of paper, planning out the details of all seven books. She began her work on Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in 1993, after the birth of her daughter, working in every spare moment she could.

Let’s all take a moment to thank our lucky stars that J.K. Rowling didn’t give up, even when her first book was rejected by several publishers. If she had, we wouldn’t have the enormous franchise that Harry Potter is today, and millions of children’s lives would be all the lesser for it.

The story of Harry Potter isn’t just a fun tale about an orphaned boy who goes to a magic school and fulfills a prophecy. It’s about love, grief, war, racism, friendship, honesty, the triumph of good over evil, the importance of hope, and perseverance against impossible odds. It’s the sort of story we all love, the sort of story that kids like to hear over and over. It’s no wonder that it’s such a success.
