Not many of you guys know this but Mario will turn 30 next year. Yeah, for 30 years he’s been the part of our childhood and will continue to do so for our kids.
It all started in 1981 when Nintendo needed a new smash-hit game after the disaster that Radar Scope proved to be. Shigeru Miyamoto sat at his drawing board and came up with Donkey Kong, starring Jumpman, a carpenter character in blue and red. But that didn’t remain his name for long. Nintendo changed his name to Mario when they released the game in the United States.
Throughout the years, he has undergo change after change in character design, setting, and platform. In 1983, with the release of Mario Bros. they changed his profession to plumber and his red shirt was changed for a brownish one. In Super Mario Bros. 2 (1988), Mario went back to his second color scheme, red shirt and blue overalls and has not changed since.
Thirty years later, Mario is the face of videogaming, more recognized around the world than Mickey Mouse. With over 250 installments, Mario is without a doubt Nintendo’s crown jewel, selling over 200 million units worl wide.
Beside the Nintendo releases there are also hundreds of fan made games that feature Mario in one way or another. One of my favorites are Super Mario War and Super Mario Brothers X. I grew up with Mario and so did most of you. And I don’t know about you guys but when I admit I’m a fan of something it means that I also have themed merchandise to prove it. It’s not much but I own 5 Super Mario t-shirts, a few figurines and of course almost all the main games. If you guys were looking for some awesome Super Mario t-shirts too, you came to the right place. I just hand picked around 100 new Mario tees and added to this collection. Check them out and pick your favorite!
