Dogs have been man’s best friend for over 15,000 years. We began domesticating them as work animals, but it’s no secret that our bond with our four-legged friends goes far beyond that, and has for a long time. Archaeologists have found that ancient people revered their dogs and buried them with special treatment, and dogs have been featured characters in mythology, literature, and movies for pretty much forever. All the evidence concludes: dogs are pretty great. They’re loyal companions, sensitive friends, and they’re always down to go for a walk or play with a ball. Dogs can even smell our feelings. Certain changes the scent we humans give off can tell our dogs when we’re happy, sad, frightened, or even pregnant. Pretty crazy, right? There’s really no better buddy than a dog.
