Studio Ghibli was founded on June 15, 1985, headed by Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, and the world of film was changed forever. It’s a relatively small studio, but it’s created over 20 gorgeous films.
Movies like My Neighbor Totoro, Grave of the Fireflies, Princess Mononoke, Howl’s Moving Castle, Ponyo, and Spirited Away are some of the most-loved non-western-made children’s movies out there. The masterful artwork, the beautiful film scores, the brilliant characters and amazing themes about humanity and our relationship to the world around us has inspired and captivated adults and children alike.

Miyazaki and Takahata aren’t afraid to do things other film animators won’t. They think outside the box. Many of the films use themes most would consider too dark for children – but they end up being all the better for it. They also make use of the “magic of everyday life”. While Ghibli characters may go on sweeping adventures, they are always grounded in their own worlds and own values, often fighting for preservation of the mundane. Characters like the lovable Totoro, the ever-popular Catbus, Ponyo, No-Face, Mei, Princess Mononoke, Howl and Sophie, and Chihiro are memorable and incredibly relatable.
