Game of Thrones- The Battle of the Bastards

by on Jun 21, 2016

If you’re like me, then you have been waiting all season for the big showdown between Jon Snow and Ramsay Bolton. Well my friends, it finally happened. In what was, in my humble opinion, one of the most epic, and bloody, battles to date, the two finally faced each other in The Battle of the Bastards! The episode’s title is named so because at one time Ramsay Bolton was Ramsay Snow, a bastard from the North. As we know, he was later legitimized by father. As we also know, Ramsay would later kill his father and take his place as Lord of Winterfell and Warden of the North.

After weeks of waiting, Jon Snow and Ramsay Bolton finally met, face to face, the day before the battle. Ramsay attempts to bully them into surrender before the battle, but Jon doesn’t bow down. In true Jon Snow style, Jon challenges Ramsay into one on one combat, instead of having numerous lives lost. Ramsay backs down, but continues with his mind games. Back at the Stark camp, Jon, Davos and Tormund strategize. Sansa grows increasingly worried and angry with Jon wanting to take the small army into battle. She tells Jon that Ramsay will provoke Jon into falling into one of his traps. Jon believes his army can win, but Sansa isn’t so sure.

The following morning, the two armies meet on the battle field, each one waiting for the other to attack first. Ramsay finally reveals himself, as well as Rickon Stark. He releases Rickon and tells him to run to his brother. Then he proceeds to fire arrows in Rickon’s general direction. Jon races to meet his brother on the field and just barely gets to him before it’s too late. Ramsay fires an arrow right through Rickon’s heart, killing him. Seeing his dead brother only enrages Jon further and he charges Ramsay’s army by himself. Jon’s army charges after their leader, only to be meet by the Bolton Army’s arrows. The two armies collide in the most epic fashion ever. Bodies flying, swords clashing, and arrows flying. As brave and determined as the Stark army was, they couldn’t handle being grossly outnumbered by the enemy, and are soon surrounded on all sides. With all hope seeming to be lost, a horn is heard off in the distance. Suddenly, the Knights of the Vale, under the leadership of Lord Baelish, arrive and decimate the Bolton army, forcing Ramsay to flee back to Winterfell. Jon, Tormund and Wun Wun give chase. Ramsay, believing that his men can hold against a siege of Winterfell, is soon proved wrong as Wun Wun breaks down the main gates of Winterfell, allowing the Stark Army to attack. The Bolton army is easily decimated by the Stark army and the Knights of the Vale. Suddenly Wun Wun is killed by Ramsay with an arrow to they eye. He then challenges Jon to one on one combat, which Jon easily wins, thus winning the battle of the Bastards and taking back his home.

The battle was truly epic. It was bloody. It was full action. It was incredible. It didn’t just live up to all expectations. It exceeded them. The only thing that was better was seeing Sansa visiting a bloody, beaten Ramsay, where she released his viscous dogs on him, thus bringing an end to Ramsay and all the Boltons!

With the North and Winterfell back in the hands of the Starks, I do have to ask this question: Which Stark rules the North? With Rickon now dead and Bran up beyond the Wall, that only leaves three left: Sansa, Arya and Jon. Even then, Jon has no real claim as he is Ned Stark’s bastard son; hence Sansa would be the next to rule. That also asks the question, about Sansa’s deal with Little Finger? Without him and the Knights of the Vale, Jon and Sansa would have been defeated. Could her deal with Little Finger cost her? And what about what Ramsay said? What part of him is still with her? Could she be pregnant with his child or was it all mind games in his final moments? That would just leave Arya left to rule the North. And I don’t know about you, but I would support her claim. Which Stark do you support? You better make that decision soon. And to show your support, you should pick up your favorite Stark’s T-Shirts!

With only one episode left of this epic season, we might get answers to some of these questions. Or in classic Game of Thrones style, we may be left with some incredible surprises, shocks, questions and a cliff hanger!
