“Scooby-Dooby-Doo, where are you…”

If you didn’t just sing that in your head, you are lying to yourself.  Scooby-Doo, everyone’s favorite anthropomorphic crime-fighting Great Dane, captured our childhoods (and continues to haunt our adulthoods) for a half hour each Saturday.  Together with Daphne, Fred, Velma, and Shaggy, he has fueled our detective dreams to no end.  The “gang” is the original squad goals, and for the past 48 glorious years, they have successfully avoided any dumb beef or love triangles.  They are from a pre-Twilight era, an easier time when young men and women could just be friends and werewolves and vampires were always one cheap mask away from justice.  But they refuse to fall out-of-date.  Despite their conspicuous lack of petty feuds that dominate movie theaters and news cycles alike, Scooby and the gang remain popular to this very day.

Another unmistakeable trademark of the Scooby-Doo franchise is the Mystery Machine.  With its groovy teal and orange paint job and its seemingly indefinite lifespan, the Mystery Machine symbolizes the vehicle of vigilante justice that the gang deals out in every investigation.  Perhaps more importantly, it looks freakin’ cool.

Through their (mostly) legal misadventures, Scooby and the gang face a number of criminal masterminds.  They try everything from cheap masks and tricks to more elaborate schemes with props, projections, and conspiracy.  Many times their deception very nearly manages to scare our ageless heroes off, but time and time again they pull through and solve the mystery.  It takes hard work, integrity, and often a well-timed Scooby Snack!

If you are caught up on all your Scooby-Doo (and if you are a true fan, you are obviously caught up), then you know that the five misfits have starred in more than 30 movies as well as television shows, comic books, and much more.  Scoobert Doo’s legacy ranks among the greats with Fred Flintstone, George Jetson, and Tom and Jerry.

What’s Scooby-Doo without the borderline gluttonous obsession for food?  Buffet, dairy, junk food, gourmet, flame-broiled, vegan… Anything, as long as it is edible!  Believe it or not, Scooby actually inspired kids to feel comfortable being in their own skin and eating what they want.  What a radical concept!

But if we bring up Scooby and the gang, it would not be fair to leave out Scrappy.  Sure, he is a little boisterous at times.  But he is as much a part of the team as anyone else.  And to be honest, we could all use a little “Puppy Power!”

The show is so iconic that many of its quotes, tag lines, and catchphrases have been absorbed into the national lexicon and continue to pop up today.  Where would we be without…  Jeepers!

Zoinks!

And jinkies!

Just think about it!  Even something as innocuous as “Let’s split up, gang!” continues to pepper regular conversation, and it is still synonymous with poor group choices and a classic battle strategy to divide and conquer.  Okay, maybe that one is not as important…

Fred, Daphne, Velma, Shaggy, and Scooby have made their imprint on history, and they aren’t disappearing anytime soon.  Keep them alive and check out a Scooby Doo t-shirt or two.  Heck, grab enough for the whole gang and your own meddling kids!

Can anyone find my glasses?  I can’t see without my- Oh.  Whoa.  Never mind.
