On March 2 of this year, Marvel is releasing their highly-anticipated tenth installment of the X-Men franchise: Logan. The film’s based on Old Man Logan by Mark Miller and Steve McNiven. It’s the third and final of the Wolverine films, and for some of us, that feels a little bittersweet.
It’s Hugh Jackman’s last time playing Wolverine. He said, “It’s going to be very different, very different in tone and hopefully very different to anything we’ve done.” –And it is. We’ve never seen anything quite like Logan from Marvel before. The film’s gritty, feeling a lot closer to films like Mad Max than films like X Men: Origins or even previous Wolverine films. There’s an urgency to it, yet also a sense of movement. There’s a new generation, a passing from the now-aged Logan and the frail Professor X to a young mutant with similar superpowers. It’s got us all intrigued.
Though the film has definitely earned its R-rating, director James Mangold stated he has no intention of it being a “bloodfest”.
“I think there’s a lot of heart all-around,” Mangold said. For example: “[Charles Xavier] becomes an incredibly powerful paternal figure in the movie. Logan is more of a reluctant one, I think you can easily guess.”
Charles may be no stranger to the parental role in X-Men movies, but Logan certainly is, and it’s going to be fantastic to see how he handles this new role. Logan is much older in this film. His superpowers are starting to fizzle out a little bit. He’s not quite as strong as he once was. He doesn’t regenerate as easily, and he’s riddled with scars – both emotional and physical. The story’s going to be a wild ride, we can already tell, but there’s no telling how it will end.
Hugh Jackman’s been playing the part of Wolverine for 17 years now. It’s sad to see him go, but equally awesome that he’s leaving with such a bang. Logan is set to be a completely unique X-Men film, something completely new and completely fresh. I’m so ready for it, are you?
