Okay, so we’re officially freaking out. Disney has announced that they’re releasing a live-action remake of Mulan. It’s set to hit theaters in Winter of 2018. Disney began a worldwide hunt for a Chinese actress to play our badass heroine in 2016. So far, the movie looks like it’s going to be crazy awesome. Here’s what we know so far:
- Mulan will sport an all-Chinese cast (it’s about time!).
- Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver of Jurassic World are writing the script.
- There’s no official director yet, but there are rumors going around that it’s going to be Niki Caro, known best for her movie, Whale Rider (2002).
The live-action remakes of Cinderella and Jungle Book absolutely killed it. Beauty and the Beast was even better. If Disney’s track record continues, Mulan is going to do more than justice to the original film – it’s going to completely blow everything we’ve seen already out of the water.
This film is going to be a lot of firsts for this line of remakes:
It’ll be the first to feature a badass, sword-wielding heroine,
…an all POC cast,
…full scale, epic battles,
…and so much more. We can’t wait! Disney better get down to business and do this right…’cause we’ve got Huns to defeat! Am I right?
