Star Wars T-Shirts and Tips to Help You Celebrate May the 4th

It seems that the rise of social media has helped to create a slew of new holidays. There’s talk like a pirate day, the scrumptious Pi(e) day and national days celebrating everything from cats and dogs to chocolate and zippers. Yes, zippers (April 29). Perhaps one of the biggest of these new holidays in May the 4th. The day in which all things Star Wars is celebrated.

I know in LA there’s at least one big May the 4th dance club event that sells out months in advance. There’ll no doubt be some local bars that host Star Wars festivities on that day. Each trying to come up with their own recipe for that blue milk Luke Skywalker drinks in A New Hope. It may be a nice excuse to have a night out and meet some other fans wearing Star Wars t-shirts.

But if you’d rather keep the festivities smaller and among friends (and worry that there’ll be too many blue milk drunk geeks on the road), I have some suggestions on how to celebrate Star Wars day in the comfort of your own home.

The obvious way to celebrate this special day is the watch the movies. Do you have time to watch all of them? Just the original trilogy? The prequels? The new movies? Your personal favorites? You could binge on Clone Wars or Rebels. Or go old school with the Droids and Ewoks cartoons. There’s always the old TV movies, The Ewok Adventure and Battle for Endor. And if you’re into masochism, I know you have a bootleg of the Star Wars Holiday Special somewhere.

Maybe a more interactive way to celebrate May the 4th is with a game night. I’d personally suggest classic board games. There are Star Wars variations of almost every game you can think of, like Monopoly, Risk and Sorry. As well as many original board and trivia games. But if your clan is more into video games, a Battlefront, Old Republic or Star Wars Lego marathon may be in order.

Make sure you create a playlist for you gathering as well as your work day and commute. Don’t just dump a bunch of songs into a folder, put some thought into it and pick your favorites: The Duel of the Fates, The Imperial March and the original Lapti Nek are staples of my Star Wars playlist. You can also mix in Meco’s disco versions of the Star Wars and Empire Strike back themes.

Food is sure to be a part of any Star Wars celebration. So why not have a potluck and have people bring Star Wars themed foods: Bib Fortuna salad, Ham Solo sandwiches, Shark Finn soup… these are just a few suggestions to Chewbacca on. No Star Wars foodie event would be complete without Princess Leia cinnamon buns! Or just spend a nice night with the family baking Star Wars shaped cookies.

Any of these celebrations will be enhanced by dressing up as your favorite Star Wars character. But if you don’t feel like dragging out your Jedi robes that night, then you have to wear a Star Wars T-shirt. Not doing so is the equivalent of not wearing green on St. Patrick’s Day.
